Local Government, City & COuncil Awards

Local government in Ireland today delivers a wide range of crucially important services to every city, town and village in this country. The sector is comprised of elected councillors and council officials, it is vital that both of these groups are kept fully informed of the major issues in key areas such as waste management, urban and rural planning, infrastructural development and the environment.

LAMA (Local Authority Members Association) acts as a highly influential force for local government reform and is continually seeking ways to engender better communication and discussion amongst councillors and local authority management, as well as those involved in the supply of goods and services to the local government sector. The LAMA executive commissioned a new publication Local Government Today to help all parties keep abreast of the key issues of importance to local government in the months and years ahead. The LAMA organisation distributes this publication to the key decision makers in every local authority around the country.

Contents for Autumn 2008 edition

  • Future for Fingal:
We talk to David O Connor, Fingal County Manager about his plans for the fastest growing region in Ireland and Europe. The economic development of Fingal will create many opportunities for the business community and we look at some of the major infrastructural projects planned for Dublin North, including Terminal 2, Dublin Airport City and Metro North. We ask Tony Lambert, Chief Executive of the Fingal Chamber, about how the chamber is working in partnership with the council to create a dynamic business environment in Fingal.
  • Focus on the West:
This special feature will examine the major issues that are affecting local authorities on our western seaboard. We talk to local authority managers in Mayo, Galway and Sligo to see how they are dealing with the issues involved.
  • Energy:
With oil and petrol prices at an all-time high, forcing local authorities to take a fresh look at this problematic area, Local Government Today looks at how local authorities are purchasing energy on the open market, who are the main operators and the role of innovative technologies in the sector.
  • Wastewater:
This feature will probe the murky issue of wastewater, one that causes concern to all local authorities. By examining some of the new technologies available and talking to some of the leading consulting engineers in the field, we aim to take a fully comprehensive view of the problem.
  • Road Safety:
We will be talking to a senior figure in the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to discuss road safety strategy. With the number of lives lost on Irish roads remaining high, we will pay particular focus on the role played by councils in reducing the death count.
  • Dublin Docklands:
Renowned as one of the great success stories arising out of the Celtic Tiger era, Local Government Today talks to the Dublin Docklands Development Authority (DDDA) about how they achieved this and what their plans for the future are.
